9 strategies for achieving a healthy work-life balance

Recognize the importance of work-life balance

What is work-life balance? Definition

Work-life balance is a state where you are able to make both your professional responsibilities and personal time coexist in an environment where neither aspect consistently overshadows the other

Work-life balance doesn’t mean you have to allocate equal time to each facet of your life. It’s more about you feeling satisfied and in control of both work and personal commitments

Achieving a healthy balance means that while you’re working, you can focus fully on work-related tasks, and when you’re off, you’re able to enjoy your personal life without constant disruptions from job demands. To speak in plain terms, you leave work at work and home at home.

Having a clear work-life balance has become critical nowadays, as work is no longer confined strictly to the office or specific hours. Indeed, with the rise of remote work and technology, your job can follow you home and even intrude on weekends if you let it, whatever your level of responsibility within your organization (CEO), senior management or any employee can be affected).

No matter where you work and no matter your role, understanding the value of work-life balance—and knowing how to achieve it—will improve your well-being. Because the technology allows it and also because responsibilities often extend outside of business hours, the boundaries can be blurred but enforcing them ultimately:

  • improves performance ;
  • better employee commitment and motivation
  • corporate loyalty ;
  • prevents burnout.

However, as the name suggests, work-life balance is not just a professional achievement; it’s a personal goal that contributes significantly to overall happiness and fulfillment. So, you’ll have to make efforts at home too. But the juice is worth the squeeze because when you create boundaries and manage your time wisely, you’re better able to be present in each area of life, whether at work or with family and friends.

The benefits of a great balance

We kinda spoiled them already, but let’s talk more about how achieving a good work-life balance brings numerous benefits across the board. Consider work-life balance not only on a personal standpoint but also as a leader or a manager.

Firstly, balanced employees enjoy better mental health, as they are not overwhelmed by stress from being constantly “on call.” Plus, since work-life balance is a state where everyone has time to recover from work pressures, it does a lot for mental resilience and this is how burnouts are prevented!

In a similar fashion, since stress is reduced, associated risks to physical health are in turn lowered, namely:

  • cardiovascular issues ;
  • sleep disorders ;
  • weakened immune function.

When employees are less stressed and have time to relax and recharge, they return to work refreshed and with a stronger focus.

Another benefit of work-life balance has to do with enhanced job satisfaction. When employees feel they have control over their time, they feel happier in their roles. This can be especially beneficial in high-responsibility positions like those in senior management, where the demands are great. As a result, in companies where work-life balance is ingrained in workplace culture, where the emphasis is put on reasonable working hours, sufficient breaks and minimal intrusion into personal time, employees feel supported and respected, so they view their roles and workplace in a more positive way.

On the personal front, a healthy work-life balance leads to healthier relationships and family life. Indeed, it goes without saying that having time for friends, family and leisure activities allows you to create meaningful connections and engage fully in your personal life. When you’re not constantly worrying about work during personal moments, you’re better able:

  • to be present and enjoy your time outside of business hours ;
  • to fulfill personal responsibilities without guilt ;
  • to spend quality time with your children and/or life partner.

6 tips for balancing work and personal life

1. Prioritize tasks and delegate

One of the most effective ways to achieve work-life balance is to prioritize tasks and learn to delegate them whenever possible.

Begin each day by listing all your tasks and categorizing them by urgency and importance. This will help you focus on high-priority activities that directly contribute to your objectives, rather than getting sidetracked by secondary items from your to-do list.

As a matter of fact, many people find that organizing tasks with tools like digital planners or scheduling apps helps them stay focused and manage time more effectively. Just go and hone in on the most impactful tasks, this way you’ll avoid spreading yourself too thin and you’ll be able to accomplish more in less time.

Delegation is a powerful tool, especially for those in leadership roles. Senior management  jobs come with many responsibilities, but that doesn’t mean senior managers or executive officers need to do everything themselves.

Effective delegation not only helps distribute the workload but also fosters a culture of trust and empowerment among team members. In environments that value work-life balance, delegation is encouraged as a way to support employees’ well-being. To sum it up, when you delegate effectively:

  • you give yourself more time to focus on tasks that require your specific skills and energy ;
  • you empower others to grow and contribute.

2. Set clear boundaries between work and personal life

As hinted previously, setting and enforcing boundaries is fundamental to maintaining work-life balance. Without clear boundaries, work can seep into every part of your life, making it rather difficult to relax and focus on personal pursuits. This tip mainly addresses remote work (both employees and freelancers), as a traditional office environment already provides a structure with strong boundaries.

So, when working from home, boundaries can be physical, such as designating a specific area of your home for work to mentally separate professional tasks from personal space. Boundaries can also be temporal, like setting a strict start and end time for your workday with set time slots for personal purposes (e.g.: picking up the kids at school).

Respecting boundaries in your own life can be as simple as setting a personal rule not to check work emails after a certain hour. Even in roles that may require occasional availability,  you can establish regular “off” times where you don’t engage with work unless absolutely necessary. This allows you to fully recharge and focus on personal life when you’re off the clock.

3. Learn to say No

Setting boundaries is one thing, enforcing them is another. And you are not the only one who needs to respect your boundaries. This is why saying no is an essential skill: you have to protect your time and maintain balance.

Of course, it can be tempting to say yes to every task or opportunity that comes your way, especially if you’re driven to succeed in your role. However, overcommitting yourself can quickly end up with you crashing down… or burning out.

Learning to say no—politely but firmly— is the right way to manage your workload and save enough time for your personal life. To decide when it’s appropriate to decline additional tasks, set your priorities straight but never lose sight of the fact that without a healthy personal life, your career is doomed anyway, and sooner than you might think.

Granted, saying no can be especially challenging in environments where there’s pressure to go above and beyond. Yet, boundaries are respected when you are direct and honest about your capacity. A polite and strategic refusal can reinforce your boundaries without compromising your professional image. In the end, saying no sets an example to create a culture that values balance and encourages everyone to respect each other’s time and well-being.

4. Do take time to relax

Incorporating leisure activities and relaxation into your routine might not be your first instinct, it might even go against your personal view of work but as a matter of fact, this is quintessential of a balanced lifestyle.

We are talking about activities which will allow you to recharge and reconnect with yourself ; activities like:

  • reading ;
  • going for a walk ;
  • engaging in hobbies or sports ;
  • taking regular vacations ;
  • spending time with your loved ones.

Obviously, weekends are a prime opportunity to relax and detach from work. This is a good thing on its own, but it will also help you professionally speaking since you will return to your tasks refreshed and ready to be productive. Leisure activities also boost creativity and problem-solving skills, as they allow your mind to rest and rejuvenate. This is how work-life balance functions: when you improve one, you improve the other.

5. Use technology to your advantage

Digital tools like project management software, scheduling apps and time-tracking software can help you organize tasks and streamline workflows, making it easier to maintain a healthy balance.

However, please note that technology can just as easily support or undermine work-life balance depending on how you use it. For instance, time-tracking tools can be used to help employees ensure they stay within reasonable working hours and avoid overworking, but as everyone knows, it can achieve the exact opposite… So, as a leader or a manager, it is up to you to make sure no one uses these tools for wrong purposes.

Another way to use technology to your advantage is by setting boundaries on communication. Turn off email notifications after work hours, or conversely, use “Do Not Disturb” features on your devices to minimize work-related interruptions during personal time. Technological boundaries can prevent work from encroaching on your personal life and ensure you’re not constantly plugged in.

6. Schedule regular breaks

A study published in the PLOS journals in 2022 has shown that taking breaks improves concentration, energy and mood, all of which are critical for long-term productivity. A common practice and a good place to start is to take a short break every hour, even if it’s just to stand up, stretch or get a glass of water.

Taking longer breaks, such as lunch breaks or stepping outside for fresh air, can also be highly beneficial. Regular breaks allow you to return to tasks with a clearer mind and renewed focus, preventing the mental fatigue that can come from working without rest.

3 tips to cultivate a mentality conducive to work-life balance

7. Self-compassion

It’s easy to be hard on yourself, especially when juggling various responsibilities. Self-compassion is all about recognizing that you’re only human and can’t do everything perfectly. Accept your limits and be kind towards yourself when you make mistakes and you’ll see that you’ll be stressed a lot less.

Self-compassion is also about allowing yourself to rest without guilt. Especially if you are in a high-stakes role, you may feel obligated to work constantly, but this mindset is just a ticket to exhaustion. Instead, embracing self-compassion is a more sustainable approach to work-life balance, and it doesn’t take a lot: you just have to acknowledge your need for breaks and time off.

8. Develop resilience

Resilience is the ability to adapt and bounce back from challenges. It allows you to navigate stress without sacrificing your well-being, so you can see why you need it to achieve a healthy work-life balance: resilience helps you handle setbacks and stresses without letting them derail your work or personal life.

Practicing resilience might take a little bit of effort from your part and involve stress-management techniques such as:

  • Mindfulness ;
  • EQ exercise ;
  • or even simply asking for feedback or guidance.

In environments where work-life balance is a priority, resilience is seen as an asset that helps employees adapt to changing demands without sacrificing their well-being. Building resilience means you can enjoy a balanced life, handling stress effectively and keeping your focus on the bigger picture.

9. Surround yourself with support

A strong support network is invaluable for achieving work-life balance. Surrounding yourself with people who understand and respect your priorities is the best method to get most if not all the encouragement and backup you need to maintain a healthy balance.

Remember, support isn’t just professional ; having friends and family who support your goals and understand the importance of balance helps you manage both work and personal life. In countries like Germany, where work-life balance is a valued cultural norm, social support networks are integral to sustaining a balanced life.

Support from others reinforces the idea that balance is not just achievable but necessary. This is key to both professional success and personal happiness.

All in all, achieving and maintaining a good work-life balance is a challenge for everyone: low-responsibility level employees have little impact on their work environment but they are also less likely to be called while off-work ; and for leaders and managers, it’s the other way around: they make the rules but they also will get more impromptu emergencies to deal with. However, the bulk of the advice remains the same in both cases and for freelance workers too: set boundaries, enforce them, don’t be too hard on yourself but also develop the ability to adapt and to get back up.

FAQ

A typical work-life balance involves effectively managing both professional responsibilities and personal life with minimal stress levels or risks of burnout. It means allocating adequate time for work tasks and personal activities like family time, hobbies and relaxation. A good work-life balance often varies by individual but generally involves feeling satisfied in both domains, without one consistently impeding the other. Flexibility, clear boundaries, and personal time are key components in achieving a sustainable balance that promotes well-being and productivity.

The quality of work-life balance can be assessed by observing personal fulfillment, stress levels, and how effectively time is shared between work and non-work activities. Key signs include whether work responsibilities are manageable without consistently interfering with personal time, the ability to disconnect outside of work hours, and a sense of satisfaction in various aspects of life. Utilizing self-assessments, tracking activities, or getting input from loved ones can help identify if adjustments are needed to maintain a healthy balance.

Achieving a harmonious blend of work and personal life involves establishing clear distinctions between professional tasks and personal moments. It’s helpful to outline specific times for work commitments and dedicate other hours to family, hobbies and relaxation. Efficiently organizing daily priorities, setting achievable objectives, and being open to assistance when appropriate can reduce overload. Periodic self-reflection and realignment with one’s personal values can contribute to sustaining both productivity and overall happiness.
